SATRA TECHNOLOGY CENTRE TESTMETHOD:SATRATM335 COLOUR FASTNESSTO WATER ANDPERSPIRATION DECEMBER2004 This method is intended to determine the likelihood of colour bleeding froma material due to the action of water and perspiration.Themethodisapplicabletoalltypes ofmaterialandinparticularthoseusedfor the manufacture offootwear uppersand clothing. SATRATM335:2004/Page 1 1.SCOPE Thismethodisintendedtodeterminethelikelihoodofcolourbleedingfromamaterialdue material and in particular those used for the manufacture of footwear uppers and clothing. 2.PRINCIPLE Atestspecimen,incontactwithastandardmultifibrefabric,issoakedwith: Method 1 - Distilled or deionised water. Method 2 -Alkaline solution of artificial perspiration Method 3 -Acid solution of artificial perspiration. The test specimen assembly is thensandwiched betweentwo glass surfaces under a standard pressure and stored in a warm environmentfora set time.The test specimen and the multifibre fabric are dried separately and the change in their colour is assessed subjectively with grey scales. 3.REFERENCES BS EN20105-AO2:1995-Methods of test for colour fastness of textiles and leather - Grey scale for assessing change in colour. Bs 950: Part 1:1980-Illuminant for colour matching and colour appraisal. 4.APPARATUSANDMATERIALS (4.2). 4.2For each test specimen, oneglassplate110±5 mm x65±5mm with a mass of 100 ± 2 g. Glass of nominal thickness 6 mm should be suitable. 4.3For each surface tobe tested, see section 8.1, a rectangular piece of multifibre fabric and weft yarns of: Filament (spun) bright secondary cellulose acetate. Bleached cotton (unmercerised). Spun nylon 6,6. Spun polyester. Spun acrylic. Worsted-spun wool. SATRATM335:2004/Page2 4.4 An oven capable of maintaining a temperature of 37 ± 2°C 4.5 Method 1 - Distilled or de-ionised water. 4.6 Method 2-Alkaline perspiration solution containing.per dm3: i-histidine monohydrochloride monohydrate: 5.00 g. Sodium chloride: 5.00 g. Disodium hydrogen orthophosphatedihydrate: 2.50 g. The solution is brought to pH 8 with o.1 M sodium hydroxide solution and will remain satisfactory for use for at least one month when stored at 4 ± 1°C. if the solution is more Discard solution which has produced precipitated solids. 4.7 Method 3 -Acid perspiration solution containing, per dm3: I-histidine monohydrochloride monohydrate: 5.00 g. The solution is brought to pH 5.5 with 0.1 M sodium hydroxide solution and will remain satisfactoryforuseforatleastonemonthwhenstoredat4±1C.fthesolutionismore Discard solution which has produced precipitated solids. 4.8 Grey scales for assessing change in colour and staining as described in 4.9 Either a light cabinet fitted with an artificial daylight tube as described in BS 950: Part 1 or north daylight. 4.10 For testing yarns or loose fibres: 4.10.1 A balance capable of measuring mass up to 100 g to the nearest 0.1 g. 5.TESTSPECIMENS 5.1 For sheet material: 5.1.1 Cut one rectangular test specimen110±10mmx55±5mm for each versionof the test tobe carried out.if insufficient material is available, cut several smallertest specimens 5.1.2 if the material to be tested is patterned, cut sufficient additional test specimens to ensure that all the colours of the pattern are in contact with all six sections of the multifibre fabric (4.3).6 5.1.3 Place a piece of multifibre fabric (4.3) in contact with the surface of the test specimen SATRATM335:2004/Page3 to be tested, see section 8.1, so that the test specimen is in contact with all six components of the multifibre fabric. if testing both surfaces of the test specimen, sandwich the test specimen between two pieces of multifibre fabric (4.3).
