Printed in USADownloaded from SAE International by University of British Columbia, Wednesday, September 26, 2018, ABSTRACT A new concept electric vehicle (EV) with four-in-wheel motor is developed to make EVs spread widely. Each motor is mounted inside a wheel and can be controlled individually. The batteries and electrical components are placed in the hollow space of frame structure under the seats. Such a compact configuration permits packaging flexibility by eliminating the central drive motor and driveline components, incl uding the transmission, the mechanical differential, the universal joints and the drive shaft. Apart from many mechanical advantages of such a structure, high performanc es of chassis control systems such as traction control, electronic differential control, direct yaw moment control and regenerative braking control systems are employed due to the rapid response and precise torque control of the motor. Simulation is conducted in ADVISOR and Matlab/Simulink environment. The results indicate that the performances of the four-in-wheel motor drive EV are significantly improved owning to the application of the innovative structure and advanced control systems. INTRODUCTION The exhaust gas and noise of fuel-using motors are becoming the greatest social hazard of pollution in high-populated areas of the world. El ectric vehicle (EV) offers one of the best solutions to improve the air quality and reduce the reliance on fossil fuels to power vehicles [1-5]. Most of the EVs have been converted from existing Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEVs). Although the converted EVs have the characteristics of easy to produce and less expensive to develop, it is difficult to fully utilize the advantages of the motor drive system [4]. Therefore, EVs design must take advantage of these virtues, which could only be incorporated into EVs. An innovation configuration for el ectric vehicle is all-wheel- drive, in which each wheel is driven individually by a motor. Motors transmit the powers through a set of transmission system or directly connect to the wheels,
