The mid-sized transmission, B 400R model, will be dis-
cussed in this paper. This model has undergone an extensive
design and development program which concentrated on pro-
viding a highly reliable and customer accepted transmission
system. Much of the development effort went into the areas of
driver and passenger comfort and acceptance of the transmis-
sion shift quality and retarder operation as well as basic prod-
uct reliability. This new product represents the latest technolo-
gy in integration of electronics in the automatic transmission
and vehicle system to provide the highest customer satisfac-
tion and value.
INTRODUCTION
A new series of bus transmissions has been developed
and introduced as a part of the new World Transmission
Family of products introduced by Allison Transmission
Division. This new line of bus transmissions incorporates
unique features developed specifically for the bus voca-
tions and includes much more of the transmission system
support equipment than previous Allison Transmission
Division products.
This paper will cover the basic features and the design
and development of the new B 400R bus transmission.
This model is the mid-range size transmission (Table 1)
which is designed specifically for standard city transit buses
and other bus applications such as intercity, suburban, and
airport shuttle.
