ABSTRACT
Dresser hasintroduced twoneWtoff
highway, mechanical drive trucks
designed tooperate inthe35to60ton,
reardump, classes. These trucks,
designated 140Mand210M,replace three
previous models whilecovering thesame
payload range. Bothdesigns incorporate
newelectronic transmission controls and
newhydraulics eliminate theneedforan
airsystem. Thispaperdescribes the
engineering features andsimultaneous 27
monthdevelopment ofbothvehicles.InNovember, 1984,Haulpak Division
ofDresser Industries (then WABCO) began
development ofapair ofsmall,
mechanical drive, off-highway haul
trucks. Theobjectiveofthisprogram
wastoup-date andsimplify theproduct
offering inthe32to54t(35to60
ton)payload classes. Thenewdesign
models, designated 140Mand210M, were
nominally ratedat32and50t(35and
55ton),respect ively. Functionally,
theyreplace threeexisting vehicles, of
32,46,and54t(35,50,and60ton)
ratings, whose original design dated
backto1957.
Both the140M and 210M were
developed simultaneously andoffer many
newengineering features. Amongthese
arEacompletely newplanetary final
drive, main frame, body, andcab.
Suspensions, hoists, steering, and
powertrain components wereredesigned to
offer improved performance. A
completely newhydraulic system, brake
system, andelectronic transmission
control system wereincorporated for
reliable and efficient machine
operation. Theairsystem was
eliminated.
Thispaper willdescribe eachof
these newsystems andcomponents, review
thetestprogram, andexplain the
vehicle's development.
