ABSTRACT Examination oftheweightandpowerrequire mentsofmainbattletanksoverthepast50yearsshows severalcleartrends.Tanksarebecoming more"dense" inthattheyarebecoming heavierandsmallerwhile theirpowerrequirements, bothpropulsive andancillary, arerapidlyincreasing. Turbomachines provide high powerandarecompact andlight;therefore, they represent aclassofenergyconversion devicesmeriting seriousconsideration intankdesign. Severaltypesof applicable turbomachines areexamined fromapower densitystandpoint andsometrade-offs affecting their interaction inanintegrated propulsion systemarede scribed. Specific comparisons aremadeofactualand conceptual combatvehicleinstallations. HISTORY ANDTRENDS HISTORICALLY, TANKS, ORMOREGENERALLY ARMORED FIGHTING VEHICLES, havebeenpropelled byreciprocating engines. Earlytankswereslow, noisy, andmadenoattempt atstealthorsleekness. Tanks haveevolved considerably inseventy years, andthis evolution, aswithothercomplex systems, hasmoved forward ataneverincreasing rateofchange.
