Thepaperreviews the hackground ofthisratherintriguing classof variable-ratio mechanical drivesandbriefly summarizes thepastworldwide research whichled tothedevelopment ofseveral automotive trac­ tiondriveCVTs.ThefttoricnCVT,whichwasa subject ofextensive research anddevelopment effortatGeneral Motorsandelsewhere, isused asanexample forillustrating typicaltraction drivecharacteristics.
