Included are:1)the Speckled Trout(U.S.AirForce), 2)LHX(Light Helicopter Experimental, U.S.Army), 3)Space Shuttle (NASA), 4)SpaceStation, 5)AFTIF-16, and6)ATF(Advanced Tactical Fighter), Someof theprograms consist oftechnology demonstra­ tions,whileothersinvolve flighttesting and one,Speckled Trout,operationally installing and utilizing asystem onacontinual basis. Insome cases,thehardware consists ofaSCIVoiceCon­ trolUnit(VeU-5137) andothers, aVoiceDevelop­ mentSystem(VDS-7001). SCIBEGANITS INVOLVE~ffiNT INSPEECH TECHNOLOGY inthelate1970's. Atthetime,SCIwasin­ volvedinspeechdigitization andcompression forthepurpose ofauralwarning systems formi­ litaryaircraft applications. Sincethen,se­ veralsystems produced bythecompany havein­ corporated voicewarning. Amongthesearethe: 1)F-16VoiceMessage Unit(Vflli)and2)Engine Warning Control Unit(EWCU), 3)F-15Integrated Communications Control Panel(ICCP), and4)F-18 Intercommunications Set(IGS). Morerecently, however, SCI'sspeechtech­ nologybasehasexpanded toinclude speechre­ cognition. Thisexpansion beganinapproximately 1980. Theneedforspeechrecognition inthemi­ litarycockpit isduetothehighworkload, hands busy,andeyesbusyenvironment. Thepilot's workload hascontinued toincrease asothertech­ nologies haveadvanced andbeenincorporated into thecockpit, resulting intherequirement for providing thepilotwithanother modality (in ad
