hasbeenusedinrearandbottom-dump trucks(Fi
gure1)withenginesupto783kW(1050ghp),andin
specialpm'poseinstallations withenginesupto895
kW(1200ghp).Sinceitsintroduction, theDP8961has
gainedwidespread acceptance asareliable compo
nentofamechanical-drive system.Inrecentyears,
mechanical-drive truckshavegainedfavorover
electrical-drive trucks(Figure 2)foravarietyof
reasons. Theseinclude:
•greaterstartability
•improved gradeability athighspeeds
•greateroverallvehicleretarding capability
•greatercontinuous coolingcapacity
ABSTRACT
Inthepastfewyears,enginepowerratingshave
steadilyincreased. Tomeetthedemandofengineand
vehiclemanufacturers foratransmission tomatch
theselargerengines,DetroitDieselAllisondeveloped
theCLBT9680 transmission. Thistransmission has
beendesigued anddeveloped tooperateinrear-dump
bucksupto127tonne(140-ton) capacity, andinbot
tom-orside-dump trucksupto154tonne(170-ton)
capacity.Intheseapplications theCLBT9680 hasapowerratingupto1007kW(1350ghp).Thetransmis
sion can alsobeapproved withengines ratedupto
1093kW(1465ghp)inspecialpm,!,oseinstallations
suchasoilfieldserviceequipment.
Inthispaperthetransmission desiguandtestde
velopment programs arepresented. Inaddition, the
extensive development programs arediscussed rela~
tivetoperformance andreliability goalsforthe
transmission.
