DURINGthelastfewyears,therehasbeen growing worldwideinterest inthesubject ofoff-highway articulated trucks. More recently, theincreasing numberof manufacturers, combined withthearticulated truck'sgreater payloads, speedsand customer acceptance, havefirmlyestablished thismachine asaviablealternative toboth conventional rigidframetrucks andwheel tractor scrapers. TobringSAEmembers up todateonthisrecenttrend, areview of thearticulated truck's evolution, development andbenefits isconsidered inthispaper. Sincethesubject ofarticulated dump trucks mayberelatively unfamiliar tothe majority ofSAEmembers, thispaperis intentionally anattempt toprovide a generalintroduction tothewholesubject. Hopefully thiswillthenbeabenchmark for further discussions atalaterdate. Thebasicconcepts ofrigidframetrucks andwheeltractor scrapers haveexisted in theconstruction industry formanyyears. Bothtypesofmachine arenowveryreliable andalthough manyperformance improvements havebeenmade(faster speeds,betterbrakes, increased operator comfort, etc.), onemajor problemstillremained -reliability in operation, i.e.theability tomaintain efficient production inpoorweather andtrulyadverse groundconditions. Amajor objective ofarticulated truckdesignisto add"operational reliability" tothe accepted mechanical reliability ofthe established conventional hauling systems. (Fig.1) Thispapersetsouttheevolution ofthe articulated truckandthelimitations ofsome ofthedesigns. Indoingthis,majordesign problems encountered willbediscussed. Finally, thebenefits associated withthis concept, compared withalternative off highway haulingunits,willbeoutlined. WHYARTICULATED DUMPTRUCKS? Inrecentyears,available worldwide salesstatistics showthattherehavebeen some4000-4500off-highway truckssold annually inthe18-40tonpayload range. Dfthese, 1200-1300arenowarticulated trucks. Indeed, inthesizeclassofunder 30tons,thearticulated dumptruckalready outsells therigidframeversion; Whathascausedthisverysignificant growthintheproportion ofsalesaccounted forbyarticulated trucks? Oneofthemajor factors hasbeenchanges takingplaceinthe earthmoving industry itself. Withthelargeworldwideincrease in majorconstruction andminingprojects which tookplaceintheperiodafter1945,the ABSTRACT Articulated dumptruckshavedeveloped alongamultiplicity oflinesfordiverse applications andreasons. Past,present andfuturedevelopments andapplications arereviewed, including the Author's experiences inthedevelopment ofDJBarticulated trucks. So
